About The Turner House Children's Clinic

Mission & History

The mission of Turner House Children’s Clinic is to provide quality primary health care to uninsured and underserved children in the Kansas City metropolitan area.

History of Turner House Children’s Clinic

Turner House Children’s Clinic (Turner House) was established in 1989 by Dr. Frank Vaughters and Episcopal Social Services. As medical director of the clinic, Dr. Vaughters secured borrowed space at Turner House Community Center and began recruiting volunteers. Together, they provided 450 patient visits in 1990. As more families brought their children to Turner House, additional volunteer providers were recruited and support staff added.   In 1993, Turner House expanded its facilities and began operating full time. In 2001, the clinic moved to its current location at the Bethany Medical Building, 21 North 12th Street, in Kansas City, Kansas. Additional provider volunteers were recruited and a part-time pediatrician was added in 2002. Nursing and support staff have since been hired to increase capacity to see more patients during weekday, evening, and Saturday clinic sessions.

An expansion in 2008 doubled the size of the clinic, including the addition of a much larger waiting room and three exam rooms for a total of eight. The additional space allowed Turner House to hire a full-time bilingual Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in March 2009 to supplement the schedules of part-time staff and volunteer physicians and improve continuity of care. With the increased capacity, the number of patient visits increased 30% in 2009 over 2008. More than 4,000 patients were served in nearly 10,000 patient visits. In early 2010, a Clinic Manager/RN was hired to replace the previous lead nurse position. A new pediatrician will begin June 1.
